What is Wait Until 8th?

Wait Until 8th is a nationwide movement for parents to come together to support one another in the effort to delay smartphones and social media for kids until at least the end of 8th grade. We are bringing it to the New River Valley.

Child psychologists, internet safety leaders and even technology executives agree that it is best to wait until at least 14 before giving children smartphones. That’s not to say they suggest you have no way to contact your children. With smart watches and simple phones, there are many options for having a way to connect with your kid without putting the full power of an addictive smartphone in their hands.

There is ton of information on why you should consider waiting, including the fact that research is now coming out showing smartphones are:

  • Changing childhood and negatively impacting behavior

  • Addictive

  • Altering children’s brains

  • Interfering with family and friend relationships

  • Exposing children to sexual content

  • Increasing the risk for anxiety and depression, and more.

Not convinced yet?

We understand there is a lot to consider before pledging to wait until after 8th grade to give your kids a smartphone. There is a ton of emerging research to support the idea that kid's brains are not ready for all that smartphones add to their lives.
